Orígenes: Año 2000 con la creación de la Unidad de Investigación de la Delincuencia en las Tecnologías de la Información (UITI). El motivo fue la creciente utilización de internet y su posible uso para cometer actos delictivos.

A pesar de que en la actualidad tiene nivel orgánico de Unidad Central, aún se sigue conociendo con su antiguo acrónimo (BIT).

La continua evolución de internet y el crecimiento exponencial de los delitos a través de las nuevas tecnologías de la información (TIC), hicieron que con la modificación de la DGP en el año 2013, pasara de ser una Brigada (BIT) incardinada en la UDEF (Comisaría General de Policía Judicial) a una Unidad Central independiente y compuesta por dos brigadas.

La UIT se constituye como centro e-Crime del Cuerpo de Policía Nacional. Se ocupará de las investigaciones especialmente complejas dentro del campo de las TIC y asumirá las competencias de coordinación a nivel nacional e internacional además de la formación de los miembros del CPN y otros cuerpos policiales en este ámbito.

Se estructura en:

Brigada Central de Investigación Tecnológica

Asume a nivel central, entre otros, la investigación relacionada con el fraude a las telecomunicaciones. Este tipo de conductas se dan tanto en la telefonía móvil e internet (calumnias, injurias, usurpación del estado civil, uso de tarjetas de crédito de forma fraudulenta, amenazas, etc.) como en la telefonía fija (locutorios clandestinos,  manipulaciones de cabinas de teléfonos, falsificaciones, tarjetas prepato falsas, fraudes con líneas de teléfono 901, 902, etc.)

Se ocupa de la protección de menores mediante la persecución de la pornografía infantil y el grooming (acoso o abuso de menores a través de las TIC: RR. SS., chat, internet, SMS, etc.).

Dentro de esta Brigada, se encuentran el Grupo de Grooming y Ciberbulling y el Grupo de Redes Abiertas, que trabaja en Internet para detectar contenidos ilícitos o delictivos e iniciar las correspondientes investigaciones. La información recogida en la red es filtrada y examinada por expertos que determinan si se trata de contenido ilegal para dar comienzo a las primeras pesquisas.

Brigada Central de Seguridad Informática

Se va a encargar de investigar los delitos informáticos, como fraudes por internet (tarjetas de crédito, ventas, subastas, bancas vituales, cartas nigerianas, solicitud engañosa de transferencia, pirámides financieras, ofertas de trabajo, casinos y apuestas).

Le corresponde la investigación de las actividades delictivas que afecten a la seguridad lógica (intrusión informática, daños y virus) y a los fraudes por internet.

También se encarga de investigar los delitos relacionados con la «piratería informática» (delitos de propiedad industrial e intelectual). Comprenden la falsificación de soportes informáticos, fonogramas, videogramas, producción, distribución y venta de software profesional y lúdico. También el «cracking» para la eliminación de protección de los programas originales.
